YouTube is full of videos showing dramatic results from DIY EGR cleaning sprays and fuel additives. Some of it is genuine; most is not. If your car has a blocked EGR valve causing rough idle, black smoke, or limp mode, the difference between the right approach and the wrong one can be the difference between a ₹3,500 clean and a ₹25,000 replacement. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve recirculates a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. This reduces combustion temperatures, which reduces NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions. EGR is standard on all diesel engines and most modern petrols in India to meet BS6 emission standards.
The problem: exhaust gas carries carbon soot, which deposits on the EGR valve, EGR cooler passages, and intake manifold over time. A restricted or stuck-open EGR valve causes:
Effectiveness: High for mild to moderate deposits
Removing the EGR valve and spraying with a dedicated EGR/carburettor cleaner (Wynns, Liqui-Moly, or Bardahl) is the most effective DIY approach. For a valve that is partially restricted (deposits but still moving), this can restore flow rate to 80–90% of new. Works best on valves that are sticky but not seized.
