DPF regeneration is the process that burns off accumulated soot inside the diesel particulate filter. When regeneration fails — common in Hyderabad's stop-start city traffic — the filter blocks, triggering warning lights and power loss. This guide explains the three regeneration modes and what to do when they fail.
1. Passive regeneration
Occurs automatically at highway speed (above 60 km/h sustained for 20+ minutes). Exhaust temperatures reach 550–600°C, which is sufficient to oxidise soot to CO2 without any ECU intervention. Most effective on cars used primarily for highway driving.
2. Active regeneration
When soot load reaches ~45% (as detected by differential pressure sensors across the DPF), the ECU initiates active regeneration by injecting extra fuel during the exhaust stroke, increasing exhaust temperature to 600–650°C to burn the soot. The process takes 20–30 minutes. You may notice slightly increased fuel consumption and a smell of burning from the exhaust during active regeneration.
3. Forced regeneration (workshop)
When soot load exceeds 75–80% (displayed in diagnostic software), passive and active regeneration cannot complete because too much soot is present. A forced regeneration is performed using diagnostic software to hold exhaust temperatures at 650°C+ for 30–45 minutes with the car stationary. After forced regeneration, soot load should drop to below 10%.
Passive regeneration requires sustained high-speed driving — impossible in Hyderabad's traffic. Active regeneration requires the car to be driven above 50 km/h for 20–30 minutes continuously after the ECU initiates it. If you:

How do I know if my DPF is regenerating?
Signs of active regeneration in progress: slightly rough idle for 20–30 minutes, slight increase in fuel consumption, burning smell from exhaust (normal — soot being oxidised), engine fan running at higher speed to maintain underbonnet temperature, and some cars show a DPF regeneration message in the instrument cluster.
Can I stop during active DPF regeneration?
Ideally no — stopping cancels the active regeneration cycle, which must restart from the beginning next time the conditions are met. If you must stop (traffic, etc.), try to keep the engine running rather than switching off. The regeneration will resume if conditions allow. Repeated interrupted regeneration cycles are the primary cause of DPF blocking in city cars.
