What is a piezo diesel injector and is it better than solenoid?
Piezo injectors use a stack of piezoelectric ceramic discs that expand electrically to actuate the needle — 5× faster than solenoid injectors. This speed allows 7–9 injection events per power stroke (pilot + main + post-injection) for quieter combustion and lower emissions. BMW M47/N47, Audi 3.0 TDI, and Mercedes OM651 diesel use piezo injectors. They are more expensive to replace (₹35,000–₹90,000 each) but last 150,000 km with quality diesel.
Can piezo injectors be cleaned?
Piezo injectors have a different internal structure from solenoid types — ultrasonic cleaning can damage the piezo element if the cleaning solvent is not specifically formulated for piezo units.
