Worn spark plugs cause more fuel waste and more engine misfires than any other wear item — yet they are one of the cheapest components to replace. Modern iridium plugs last 60,000 km, but copper plugs in city-driven Indian cars should be replaced every 30,000 km. This guide explains the difference.

Do not fit copper plugs in an engine that specifies iridium — the gap and heat range are calibrated for the engine. Using the wrong type can cause persistent misfires or accelerated tip wear.

How often should spark plugs be replaced in India?
Copper plugs: every 20,000–30,000 km. Iridium plugs: every 60,000 km. Double iridium (BMW, Mercedes OEM): every 80,000–100,000 km. In Hyderabad's heavy city traffic with frequent cold starts and rich-running conditions, spark plugs should be replaced at the lower end of these intervals.
Can worn spark plugs damage other components?
Yes. Misfires from worn plugs send unburnt fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter by overheating it when the fuel ignites in the exhaust. Modern ECUs detect misfires and limit catalyst-damaging misfire counts — but a persistent misfire that triggers a catalyst fault code (P0420) can result in a catalytic converter replacement costing ₹20,000–₹80,000.
Can I replace spark plugs myself?
On many older cars with easily accessible plugs, yes — it is a straightforward job with a plug socket and torque wrench. On modern turbo engines (VW TSI, BMW, Mercedes) the plugs can be deeply recessed, require specific socket extensions, and must be torqued to specification to avoid thread damage.
