Engine oil is the single most important fluid in your car, yet most Indian car owners either change it too late or use the wrong grade. This guide explains oil grades, types, correct change intervals for Indian heat and traffic conditions, and the real cost of getting it wrong.
Engine oil viscosity is rated by two numbers — for example 5W-40. The first number (5W) is the cold-start viscosity (W = Winter), and the second (40) is the operating temperature viscosity. In Indian conditions, the operating temperature rating matters most.

Always use the grade specified in your owner's manual. Using a thicker grade than specified does NOT provide better protection — it increases internal friction, reduces fuel economy, and can cause cold-start oil starvation in modern engines with variable valve timing (VVT).

Which engine oil grade for Maruti Suzuki cars?
Most modern Maruti Suzuki cars (Baleno, Swift, Brezza, Grand Vitara) use 0W-20 full synthetic oil (OEM: Maruti Genuine Engine Oil 0W-20). Older Maruti models with K10B or G10 engines use 5W-30. Always check the oil cap or owner's manual — using 5W-30 in a 0W-20 engine causes VVT rattle and fuel economy loss.
How often should I change engine oil in India?
For full synthetic oil: every 10,000–12,000 km or 1 year in Indian conditions. For semi-synthetic: every 7,500 km or 9 months. For mineral oil: every 5,000 km or 6 months. What happens if engine oil is not changed on time?
Overdue oil becomes acidic as its additive package depletes.
