Engine coolant is the most frequently mishandled fluid in Indian cars. Coolant Types — OAT, IAT and HOAT

Three main coolant chemistries are used in Indian cars — and they must NOT be mixed:

  • IAT (Inorganic Additive Technology) — traditional green coolant. Used in older cars (pre-2010 Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, Ambassador). Uses silicate-based corrosion inhibitors that deplete quickly — needs changing every 2 years or 40,000 km. Colour: bright green.

The colour coding is not universal between brands — a red coolant from one manufacturer may be OAT, from another it may be HOAT. Always use the specific type specified in your owner's manual, not just the matching colour.

What Happens When You Mix Coolant Types

  • IAT + OAT mixing — the silicate in IAT reacts with the carboxylate in OAT, forming gel-like deposits that block narrow coolant passages in the heater core and water pump inlet. This causes overheating and heater failure.
  • Topping up with water only — dilutes the corrosion inhibitor concentration and lowers the boiling point. In Hyderabad's heat, an already low coolant level topped with water can reach boiling point in heavy traffic. Water also accelerates aluminium corrosion.
