Brake pads wear faster in Indian city conditions than anywhere in the world — constant stop-start traffic, frequent emergency braking, and Hyderabad's gradient road network all accelerate wear. This guide tells you exactly when to replace, which pads to choose, and what the full job should cost.

Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacing

  • Squealing or squeaking when braking — most brake pads have a metal wear indicator that contacts the disc when pads reach 2–3 mm remaining. This is designed to be annoying so you book a service.
  • Grinding or metal-on-metal scraping — the pad has worn through completely and the steel backing plate is contacting the disc directly. Discs will groove and score. Replace immediately.
  • Longer stopping distances — you are pressing the pedal harder than usual to achieve the same deceleration. This means reduced friction material or glazed pads.
  • Brake pedal pulsating — vibration through the pedal during braking indicates disc warping, not always pad wear. But pads worn unevenly can cause minor pulsation.
  • Car pulling to one side under braking — one pad wearing faster than the other, or a seized brake caliper. Always investigate pulling — it is a safety fault.
  • Brake warning light — some cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) have electronic brake pad wear sensors that trigger the dashboard warning when pads reach minimum thickness.

Brake Pad Types and Which to Choose

Three main categories of brake pads are sold in India:

Should Discs Be Replaced With Pads?

Not always, but always measure before reusing:

  • Every disc has a minimum thickness stamped on it. Discs worn below this minimum cannot dissipate heat adequately and risk cracking under heavy braking. They must be replaced.
  • Discs with deep grooves or scoring (caused by metal-on-metal contact from worn-through pads) must be replaced — new pads on grooved discs wear unevenly and noisily.
  • Discs within specification but lightly scored can be machined (re-surfaced) on a brake lathe, restoring a flat surface for new pads. This is cost-effective on thicker discs with margin to machine.
  • Disc warping — causing pedal pulsation — can also be corrected by machining if the disc is within minimum thickness after machining.
