A failing alternator causes battery drain, flickering lights, and eventually a car that stops mid-journey. The problem is often misdiagnosed as a battery fault. This guide explains how to tell the difference and what the repair costs.
The alternator is a belt-driven generator that converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy to power all of the car's electrical systems and recharge the battery. A healthy alternator produces 13.8–14.8V at the battery terminals when the engine is running. Below 13V indicates the alternator is not charging adequately.
Modern alternators also feature smart charging — the ECU controls alternator output based on battery state of charge and electrical load, reducing fuel consumption by not overcharging a full battery.
Simple voltage test (multimeter across battery terminals):
A battery that tests good but repeatedly goes flat after being charged is almost certainly an alternator fault, not a battery fault. Replacing the battery without fixing the alternator wastes money and leaves the new battery permanently undercharged.
| Service | GarageNation | Dealer |
|---|---|---|
| Alternator repair (brushes, regulator, diode) | ₹3,500–₹8,000 | Not typically offered |
| Alternator replacement — Indian cars | ₹5,500–₹14,000 | ₹12,000–₹28,000 |
| Alternator replacement — European cars | ₹12,000–₹32,000 | ₹30,000–₹70,000 |
| Alternator belt replacement (at same time) | ₹800–₹2,500 additional | ₹2,000–₹5,000 |
GarageNation always replaces the alternator belt at the same time as the alternator if the belt is older than 3 years — the labour to access the alternator includes belt removal, so the incremental cost of a new belt is minimal.
How do I know if my problem is the battery or alternator?
Test voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running. A healthy alternator produces 13.8–14.8V. Below 13V with the engine running means the alternator is not charging adequately — the battery is fine, the alternator needs attention. If the resting voltage (engine off) is below 12V, the battery may be discharged or failing — but if the alternator is also undercharging, it is draining the battery.
How much does alternator replacement cost in Hyderabad?
Alternator replacement at GarageNation costs ₹5,500–₹14,000 for most Indian cars (Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Honda, Toyota). European cars cost ₹12,000–₹32,000. The belt should be replaced at the same time — it costs ₹800–₹2,500 incremental and avoids a second alternator removal when the belt fails.
Can an alternator be repaired instead of replaced?
Yes — alternator brushes, voltage regulators, and diode rectifiers are all replaceable components. GarageNation repairs alternators at the component level when practical (₹3,500–₹8,000) vs full replacement. If the alternator body or rotor is damaged, replacement is the correct solution.
